September 30, 2014

Good Morning.

Today's essential question is "did Rome fall or was it pushed?"  You will be asked to categorize the reasons why Rome fell into categories.  Then you will use inductive reasoning to discuss the factors involved.

But first:  There is an exit slip today.  Go to turn in work here, complete the exit slip on your own.  No internet searches are allowed, but you may use your notebook, or your any presentation that you made prior to today.

September 25, 2014 #Stoic

Prepare to challenge yourself today.

1.  Don't forget to post your blog before tomorrow.  To do this, open blogger, create new post, and answer the following questions:

Define "enduring impact" as it relates to history.  Find two images or links of enduring impacts of Rome.  Explain how each image show an enduring impact.  (question adapted from G. Holman)  Think outside of Rome.

Today we are learning about a philosophy that shaped Roman society.  Philosophy is defined as a guiding principle for behavior.  This philosophy was called Stoicism.

Your will be asked to read several quotes from Stoic teachings.  You will be asked to translate them into 7th grade language.  This is a very collaborative activity.

Then we will discuss how this philosophy influenced average Romans, and then translated to future generations of people.

Good luck, have fun, and challenge yourself.

Hump Day.

Thank you all for working so hard on blogs and presentations.  I liked what I saw yesterday.

If you get a chance look a Maya C. and Justin C's Enduring Impact Gallery, it is awesome.

Also Abbie B. and Jesse P. have great scratch projects going.

Finally, Eva M. has set the bar high for blogs.  Loving the great work.

First you will need to complete today's exit quiz.  It is on paper.  =)

Today is workday Wednesday.  What that means, for those of your working ever so diligently on your optional projects, you get a chance to work.  If you have yet to choose a project, I will be encouraging (nagging) you in that direction.

If you are missing something, then you must turn it in before you get project time.  Mandatory work comes before optional projects.  In fact, I will not grade an optional project if you are missing mandatory work.

Of course you have a blog due on Friday but I am sure that will not take all of your time.

As I walk around, I expect to see great collaboration, great ideas, and a great work ethic.  Anything less and  I will assume you need a quiz.

Oh yeah, one last thing.  I believe that today is Chipotle day for LOMS.  4 to 8 pm at the Chipotle on Madonna Road. Bring a friend, bring and enemy, heck bring the whole neighborhood.  One free burrito for the first student that I see and I will spring for the guac.  I will be there sometime between 6 and 6:15.

September 23, 2014

Today's agenda
1. Gallery walk.  Each team will get the opportunity to share their enduring impact gallery with other teams.
2. Add to page 15 of your notes.
3. Define enduring as it relates to history.
4.  On page 14.  Illustrate what you think is the most enduring impact.
5.  If you finish early, check your blog post from last week.  Is it on my site?  Look at other blog posts.  How does yours compare?

Monday, September 22, 2014

Don't you just love Mondays? I know I am excited to start another week with fantastic students.

Well, I got a chance to look at your blog posts, and I see a lot of great things.  Most impressive was the amount of pictures that connected your learning.

I also noticed something.  71 out of 130 students turned their link in on time.  Of those a whole handful shared the wrong link.  I will show how that is done today before we do anything else.

After your link is correctly submitted, then you will be asked to finish the assignment that you and a partner started on Friday.  You will be asked to  share your presentation with other groups.  If you want to know if you link is correctly submitted visit https://sites.google.com/a/slcusd.org/mr-angel/student-blogs.

Finally, this week's blog post due Friday!

Define "enduring impact" as it relates to history.  Find two images or links of enduring impacts of Rome.  Explain how each image show an enduring impact.  (question adapted from G. Holman)

September 17, 2014

Happy Humpday!

Yesterday you were asked to chart the growth of the Roman Empire, today you are going to learn how to write a great blog for history class.

What do you think makes a great blog? Below are a few elements that will get you started.

  1.  Organized.  Does it make sense organizationally?
  2.  Do you make it both interesting and reflective?  Reflective means that you are connecting this knowledge with something you know.
  3.  Is it well written?  Do you use proper punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar.  Did you proofread your work? Better yet, did someone else proofread your work.
  4.  Do you use outside links or pictures?  If so, do you give credit to the source?
Here is the blog topic: Rome grew from the Italian Peninsula to an empire on 3 continents.  Describe the geographic borders at it height.  What problems might the Romans have faced with governing such a large empire?  How did they overcome these problems?

How would one start this piece you ask?  Well, break down the question into two parts.  The first part starts with "describe."  How would you tackle this?  I would start with a great attention grabbing sentence.  Then I would hit every border from North to the South.
I would be informative, that means I would find out how far it is from the eastern border to the western border, or from the northern border to the southern.

Be descriptive, but not boring.  Have fun.

On Friday, you will be asked to submit a link to me.

Mr. A.

September 16, 2014 #Romeexpands

So as discussed in the 7 Stages of a Civilization, the 3rd stage is expansion.

Today we will discuss the far reaches of the Roman border.  What did that mean for average citizens, how about the government?  What were the challenges that Rome faced as they grew?

September 15, 2014 #Rome

Happy Monday.

What a great weekend.  I hope we are all ready to have an awesome LOMS week.

This week, you will be asked to write your own blog about Rome.

Question:  Rome grew from the Italian Peninsula to an empire on 3 continents.  Describe the geographic borders at it height.  What problems might the Romans have faced with governing such a large empire.

A great blog will include links to more information about the topic, pictures, proper citations, and great connections.

You will get time in class, but your blog is due Friday. You will turn it in on by attaching a link to me on the turn in page. Have fun, share your blog with others.

Today, you will be asked to outline a lesson in the textbook. The textbook is a secondary source of information. This process will help you to organize information.

September 11, 2014

What a phenomenal group of students you have been this week.  The 7 Stage of Civilization notes were tough, but you all showed great patience and intelligence with you dialog (discussion).

Today is the 13th anniversary of a very significant day in American history.  The U.S. was attacked by terrorists.  I know this was before most of you were born, but for people just 11 years older than you, this was a very significant day, a day that is people often remember where they were and what they were feeling as planes crashed into the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon.  Events like this shape history, and it is important that we learn lessons not as to what happened, but why it happened.

If you were to look at yesterday's notes and discuss the invasion section, you might feel that 9/11 was surely a sign of invasion.

Today, we are going to take what you know, and apply it to the history of Rome.  I will ask that you keep the Stages of Civilization fresh in your mind, and be ready to compare.

Your first assignment today is to click on the PBL link on my web page.  Read through it, and we will have a question and answer session.

Next, I we will learn how Rome grew from a city to an empire.  Be ready for a quiz either today or Friday.
Read through this page and add to your notes.

As always, go out and bless two people with your kindness.

Hello 7th Graders,

Yesterday was quite challenging, but you folks are up to the challenge.

We learned about the 7 Stages of a Civilization, and how it applies to the U.S.
We did not finish, so we will finish today.  Please access all your prior knowledge on U.S. History.

You all came up with great ideas yesterday, so to recap,

Stage 1: Mixture was when the Europeans mixed with the indigenous people of the U.S. and eventually took it over.   I believe Riley equated this to indigenous plants being invaded by non native plants which took over.

Stage 2: Gestation -- The U.S. period as defined by all classes was either the Colonial Period, The Revolutionary war, or the signing of the Constitution.

Stage 3: Expansion -- Manifest Destiny, Louisiana Purchase, Gold Rush, Transcontinental Railroad, Lewis and Clark, or as Tosh put it "the period from the end of The Revolutionary War to the start of The Civil War.

Today we will discuss Stages 4 through 7.

Tonight your will summarize your notes.

Keep up the good work.

Don't forget to make some one's day with a compliment!

Mr. A.

September 9, 2014

Have you ever wondered why civilizations or empires collapse and disappear?  Well historians have many theories, but today we will go over how the life span of a civilization.

Set up your notebook like the one up front.

Read the packet, take notes as you go.  Ask questions if you have any, and be ready to apply what you learned to our civilization here in the U.S.

At the end of class, we you will be asked to write a short topic sentence in preparation to summarize your day's learning.

As you leave, how did you make yesterday great for someone?  Choose to make today great for others as well.

Mr. A

Happy Monday,

I gave feedback on the 5 Themes of Geography notes and summaries.  I want to say that several students did really well.  Remember, a great summary is less than 25 words yet contains all the vital information from the summarized notes.  Take a look at your notes in Google Classroom for more information.

I also had a chance to grade the World Map assignment.  I want to remind students that attention to detail is important.  Be precise and neat in your map work this year.  All proper nouns should be capitalized.

Today,

1st, copy the vocabulary on page 6 of your notebook.  See example on the projector.  Rate your knowledge of the vocabulary as either: I know it, I don't know it, or I kind of know it.  I know it, means you can use the word properly in a sentence, I don't know it means it is very new to you.  I kind of know it means that you have hear the word, but are unsure of how to use it in a sentence.

Then copy the homework from my homepage to your calendar.

Next, I am going to clarify a few things from the 5 Themes of Geography.

Items to hand in:

World Map -- Due Tomorrow
Phone Log -- Late
Class Syllabus -- Late
5 Themes of Geography -- Late put in Google Classroom
Map Activity Notes -- Turn in on web site, link to turn in here.  (Not Google Classroom

Before you leave my class, decide to make someone's day better, and then go do it.

Mr. A.

September 4

Good Day,

I am out today at district training.  While I am gone Mr. Harris is scheduled to be our guest.  Please show him how awesome the lions are.

Today you will need to accomplish two main things.

The first is a map skills page found on the this link click here.  You will need to read out of the book on your table and gather facts.  This should take no longer than twenty minutes.  If the link does not work, then go into the interactive notebook tab on my web page.  The page is titled map activities.

The second is a sheet that Mr. Harris will handout.  Work quickly, but diligently.  All work will be collected tomorrow via a link.

Zero Period, don't forget that I will stamp your page 0 tomorrow.

Have a great day, and again, show your Lion pride and be awesome.

September 2, 2014

Welcome back from a long three-day weekend!

Today you will need to go to Google Classroom, view the PPowerPoint.  Pick one partner at your table to complete the question sheet with, but make sure that each of you turn in a sheet for credit.  You may also watch the YouTube video if available.  I use the YouTube for education icon, and looked up 5 themes of geography by Han Liu.  His link is here.

To create and turn in your notes, you will need to create a copy, then rename the copy periodfirstnamelastinitial 5 Themes of Geography.

Example:  1johnd 5 Themes of Geography would be john doe in first period.

(In the event that you share a first name with and last initial with someone in class (ie Seth W.) then you will need to go out three letters. ) (Seth Wal or Seth Wam)

This assignment will be graded on Friday.
