Happy Halloween.  I found a blog worth sharing about the holiday.  http://romanology.blogspot.com/2008/10/truth-about-halloween.html
And a cool Brain Pop shared by Abby B.  http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/culture/halloween/

The last two days you have examined the question "why did Islam spread so quickly." The first day was about Mecca's role as a trade center, and how the trade helped expose people to Islam.
Yesterday you read selections from the Qur'an.  How do you think the sections help answer that question?  What did the Qur'an promise?  Who did it make those promises to?

After a brief discussion on yesterday's lesson, I would like to see some of you expertise in the area of scratch and app creation.

http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/culture/halloween/
Here is your theme.  Halloween.  Can you design, or change, a game or app that is specific to Halloween.  Even better, can you teach someone in your group how to use scratch for a Halloween specific game/app?

As we move on through the world of Islam, I wanted to share the word diffusion with you.  Scientifically speaking diffusion means moving a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.  However in history diffusion takes on a cultural meaning.  For example, Minecraft is a very popular game today in the United States even though it comes from Sweden.  It popularity of course came from Youtube.  Thus Minecraft was diffused from Sweden to the rest of the world through Youtube.

Well the Islamic religion, beliefs, and laws were also diffused.  Mostly through trade, but also through military conquest.  We will learn about Islam's growth over the next few days by studying primary sources.

On a totally unrelated note, Halloween is coming up, and I found a neat blog about the holiday that I wanted to share. http://romanology.blogspot.com/2008/10/truth-about-halloween.html

Today you are continuing to work on your team project about the Five Pillars of Islam.

Make sure that you include definitions and Arabic words to get the most points.

For example:  Pillar one is Shahada (الشهادة).  It is the belief in one God.  The prayer reads like: lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, muhammadun rasūlu-llāhThere is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God.

Have fun with the project, but be ready to present on Friday.  Keep your presentations to 3 minutes.

October 21, 2014 #5 Pillars

Warm Up:  Write a short summary on yesterday's notes on the Origins of Islam.

What guides Muslims in their daily life?  What do they believe and why?  You will find the answers to these on a group quest.

Go to Google Classroom.  Work in teams of no more than 4, but greater than 1 to complete the questions.  Be ready to present your work by Friday.  You can present in a speech, skit, poster, electronic presentation, voki, animoto.  Plan to have three class days to complete your work.

A big thank you to all my classes for being great representatives for LOMS while I was out.

If you were absent on Friday, please take Islam Exit Slip 1.  It is on this link.

Today we are learning how Islam got started.  You will need to do some research to answer the following notes.  Your notes need to go on page 33 of your IAN.

Finally, I pulled this from Friday's exit slip:
The Life of a Nomad by Jesse V.

I was born in a caravan in the dry, hot summer, traveling to a town about a mile away. We got there and bought dates, clothes and water for the following journey to an oasis about 4 miles away. Along the journey, we had to kill two of our camels for food and water. We make it and buy to more camels and make camp at the oasis. It is the most beautiful oasis in all of Arabia. We pack our stuff in the morning and repeat for the rest if our lives.

Hi all,

I have been out for a few days, and I appreciate the good reports from Mr. Marshall.

You will have two exit slips between now and Monday.  The first is on my web page and is due by Friday.  You will have time work on it in class.

The first will be on the geography of Arabia and adaptations.
Think about sedentary vs. nomad, oasis vs. desert, souk, crossroads.

The second exit slip will be about the Origins of Islam.

Don't forget to turn in your notebook today if you have not done so.

Excellent work yesterday.

If you did not finish your notes, that is homework.  Take a look a the exit quiz from yesterday.

The format of the first question gave a lot of folks trouble.  It is a fill in the blank with two blanks question.  Simple enough on its own, but the multiple choice answers confused a few folks.

Take a look at the sample below.

The mascot of Los Osos Middle School is _____________, while MBHS is the ______________.  You all know the answers are Lions and Pirates.  But be careful if the answers are multiple choice.

A.  Pirates, Lions
B. Tigers, Lancers
C. Lions, Pirates
D. Chipmunks, Squirrels.

If those are your choices, then C would best complete the sentence.

If you think you answered your exit slip question incorrectly yesterday, then give it another try.

Now on to today.  I have time built in if anyone else would like to share their awesome project.
After, we will watch a short video on Rome.

Do not forget to get your IAN signed this evening if you have not done so.  It is due tomorrow.

I really enjoyed the sharing of projects yesterday.  Great stuff.

On tap for today,

Rome splits into two halves.  How was it cut into two?  Well as Maddie F. would say "with a pair of Caesars." chuckle, chuckle.

Seriously,  the western half of Rome will keep its capital in the City of Rome.  It will be governed by many different emperors after the split, some of them from Germanic tribes.  They will retain Latin as their language, and the state religion will become what we know today as Roman Catholic.  The bishop of Rome will take on the title of pope and will be separate from the emperor.

The eastern half will become known as the Byzantine Empire.  It comes from the Greek area known as Byzantium.  The state language will become Greek.  Their Emperors will not only govern the government, but will also be in charge of the religious side of the house.  The religion in the east becomes Greek Orthodox.  The capital will be Constantinople which is know today as ................put on headphones and click here.

Today you will complete your notes and exit slip 6.  Exit slip 6 is on my web page.

Monday, October 6, 2014

Happy Monday,

Today we are doing quite a bit.

You will need to set up your parent signature and reflection pages in you notebook.  You will also need to update your table of contents.

Notebooks are due on Friday with a parent/guardian signature.  Share your notebook and you blogs with your folks.  After all, you do great things.

Then we will see if students want to share their PBL.  On this project sharing is voluntary, but important none-the-less.

Finally, you blog from last week is due today.  Good luck, and have a great week.

October 2, 2014

Continuing on with did Rome Fall or was it pushed?

On page 20 of your notebook, create a t-chart with two categories.  The first category is
Internal Factors (fall).  The second category is External Factors (pushed).
Read the The Ten Theories on the Fall of Rome.

View the slide presentation. click here

Match the slides to the ten theories. If you want to really rock it, then find a more current cartoon that fits each theory.

Today's Exit Slip Questions:

1.  Define decay.

2.  Give two reason why Rome fell into a state of decay.  Defend your answer in complete sentences.

Turn this in on good old fashioned paper.  Don't forget to put your name in the upper right hand corner.

October 1

Think about the categories that you created as group yesterday.  How do they fit with the new reading.

On page 19: Create a Cornell notes page with a straight line down the middle.

Add these questions:
  1. What factors led to barbarian invasions?
  2. How did large farms and LATIFUNDIAS affect the economy?
  3. Why is it important to have a system in place to select a new emperor?
  4. How did the sheer size of the empire lead to chaos?
Write a summary using these words:

barbarian
Latifundia
inflation
corruption
expansion

Next view the presentation.  click here  Match each cartoon to the handout on the fall or Rome.  Be prepared to defend your answers.
