Welcome back from your week-long break.  I hope everyone found time to be thankful for having access to knowledge.  Schooling is not a gift that every person receives around the world.  It is a great benefit here in the United States, and SLCUSD is a place where I am thankful to not only work, but have my child in the district.

The next unit is Africa.  Africa is portrayed in the media as a poor continent full of diseases like AIDS and Ebola.  People survive on very little.

However that is only a part of the story.  Africa has a rich history as you learned last year when you studied Egypt.  For our studies we will move west from Egypt into west Africa.  West Africa has a storied history, full of battles to control a very rich trade.  In fact, Mansa Musa who was the king of Mali, is said to be one of the richest men in the history of the world.

Over the course of the unit, you will have the opportunity to blog, read for understanding, and create.

Have fun.
